A full, well-placed garland makes a mantel the focal point of the room. Measuring first and using the right hangers keeps it looking full and avoids damaging the mantel.

Step 1: Measure the mantel

Measure the length of the mantel shelf. Decide on the style: a straight garland along the front edge, swags that dip between hooks, or ends that hang down the sides. For swags and hanging ends, you need extra length; a 6 ft mantel often needs about 9 ft of garland. See our Christmas garlands for lengths and pre-lit options.

Step 2: Fluff the garland

Lay the garland flat and bend each tip in a different direction, the same way you would shape an artificial tree. A well-fluffed garland looks nearly twice as full.

Step 3: Choose how to attach it

  • Mantel clamps or garland hangers: clamp onto the shelf edge with no adhesive or holes. Check the maximum shelf thickness.
  • Adhesive hooks: stick to the underside or front edge of the shelf. Check the weight rating and use removable hooks to protect paint and wood.
  • Weighted holders: stocking holders or decorative weights on top of the shelf can anchor the garland too.
  • Zip ties or floral wire: attach the garland to the hooks or clamps so it does not slide.

Step 4: Hang from the center out

Attach the middle of the garland first, then work toward each end so the sides are even. For swags, place hooks at even intervals and let the garland dip between them. Adjust until both ends hang at the same length.

Step 5: Add lights and decor

If the garland is not pre-lit, weave in battery fairy lights so no cord runs down the fireplace. Then add ribbon, ornaments, pine cones or berry picks, repeating the same items at even intervals for a balanced look.

Keep it safe near a fire

If you use the fireplace, keep greenery, ribbon and decorations away from the firebox opening and the area directly above it that gets hot. Never leave a fire unattended, and turn off lights when you leave the room. Artificial garland can still burn, so treat it like any other decoration near heat.

Finish the mantel

Hang stockings below the garland with sturdy holders; see our Christmas stockings guide. Browse more ideas in the indoor decor category.
