Shop by age first. Manufacturers list a recommended age on every toy, and it matters for safety as well as fun. Toys with small parts are not safe for children under 3, who can choke on them. For older kids, a toy aimed slightly above their age can be frustrating rather than exciting.
Gifts that get played with for months tend to be open-ended: building sets, art supplies, dress-up, ride-on toys and board games the whole family can play. STEM kits are a good middle ground between fun and learning, especially for ages 8 and up.
Check whether the gift needs batteries, a charger, an app or an adult to assemble it, and buy the batteries in advance. For outdoor gifts such as bikes and scooters, include a helmet.
Popular toys often sell out in December, so shop early. For small extras, see stocking stuffers, and count down to Christmas with a toy advent calendar.
