Tabletop trees usually range from about 18 inches to 4 ft tall. Measure the surface first: a tree should not hang over the edge of a side table or block a window. For mantels, check the depth as well as the length.
Power is the big decision. Battery-operated trees can go anywhere, and a built-in timer (often 6 hours on, 18 hours off) stretches battery life. USB or plug-in trees are better if the tree will be lit every evening for weeks.
Look for a weighted or wide base so the tree does not tip when someone brushes past. Some mini trees come in burlap or decorative pots, which look finished without a tree skirt. Look for a removable battery box that is easy to reach.
Mini trees make good gifts for offices, teachers and grandparents, and they are a simple way to add a second tree to a kitchen or bedroom. For larger rooms see our slim trees and full-size artificial trees.
