Pre-Lit Christmas Trees Buying Guide

A pre-lit tree is only as good as its lights. Look for LED bulbs: they run cool, use less power and usually last longer than incandescent mini lights. Decide between warm white, multicolor or color-changing lights that switch between the two with a remote or foot pedal.

Light count matters most on taller trees. A common rule is about 100 lights per foot of height, so a 7.5 ft tree looks well lit with 700 to 800 bulbs or more. Check whether the tree keeps the rest of the strand lit when one bulb fails; this feature saves a lot of frustration.

Connections are the other weak point. Trees with power running through the center pole connect automatically when you stack the sections, with no plugs to match between branches.

Look at the warranty too. Many brands cover the tree for several years but the lights for a shorter time. If you want full control over your lights, an unlit artificial Christmas tree plus your own string lights is the alternative.
