Wrapping Paper Buying Guide

Compare rolls by total area, usually listed in square feet, not by the number of rolls. Wider rolls (30 inches or more) wrap large boxes without piecing two sheets together, which saves both paper and patience.

Thickness makes a big difference. Thin paper tears at the corners and shows the box print through, while heavier paper folds crisply and looks more polished. Gridlines on the back make it easy to cut straight lines; some papers also have fold guides.

For a natural look, kraft paper pairs well with twine and greenery and is usually recyclable. Papers with foil, glitter or plastic coatings are often not accepted by recycling programs, so check if that matters to you. Buy extra tape before you start wrapping.

Buy two or three coordinating designs rather than many random ones, and finish with matching ribbons and bows. Store leftover rolls in a wrapping paper organizer to keep them from crushing.
