Glass reflects light in a way plastic cannot match, which is why glass ornaments are often the pieces people keep for decades. Options range from plain glass ball sets to hand-painted figures and mouth-blown ornaments made in small workshops.
Glass is heavier than plastic, so hang it on sturdy inner branches rather than the drooping tips. Metal ornament hooks that you close into a loop hold better than open S-hooks. Keep fragile ornaments out of reach if you have pets or toddlers, and use shatterproof ornaments on the lower third of the tree.
Check the cap: good glass ornaments have a secure metal cap that does not pull off easily. Finishes such as mercury glass, frosted, glitter and matte look best when you mix two or three in the same color family. Unpack them over a soft rug or towel.
Store glass ornaments individually in a divided ornament storage box, never loose in a bin.
