Light Projectors Buying Guide

A projector is the quickest way to light the front of a house: stake it in the yard, plug it in and aim it. There are two main types. Laser projectors throw sharp dots of light, often red and green, across a wide area. LED projectors show shapes such as snowflakes or moving patterns, usually with softer edges.

Brightness and distance decide how much wall you can cover. Check the recommended projection distance and coverage area against the size of your house, and remember that projectors look brightest on light-colored walls.

Because the projector sits outside all season, look for an outdoor rating such as IP65, a sturdy ground stake and a long power cord. A built-in timer or remote saves you from walking out every night.

Point lasers at your house, not at the sky or the road. Projectors work best combined with a few outdoor string lights on the roofline or trees.
