Wired ribbon has thin wire along both edges, so it holds the shape of loops and tails. It is the best choice for large bows, wreaths and tree garland. Non-wired satin and grosgrain ribbon tie neatly on smaller gifts and are easier to curl or knot.
Width changes the look. Narrow ribbon (about 1/4 to 1 inch) suits small gifts, while 1.5 to 2.5 inch ribbon makes full bows on larger boxes, wreaths and trees. Check the roll length too, since tree and wreath projects use much more ribbon than gift wrapping.
Velvet and plaid ribbons look rich for traditional decor; metallic and sheer ribbons add sparkle. Pre-made stick-on bows are the fastest option when you have a big stack of gifts. Store ribbon rolls upright so the edges do not crush. Wired ribbon can be reused for years.
Choose one or two ribbon colors that match your wrapping paper, and use leftover wired ribbon on your wreath or tree.
