For a real tree, the stand has to hold the trunk steady and enough water. A fresh-cut tree can drink a lot in the first days, so look for a large reservoir and check the maximum trunk diameter and tree height the stand supports. Swivel or single-bolt stands make straightening much easier than four-screw designs.
Artificial trees often come with a stand, but cheap plastic or thin metal stands can wobble. A replacement stand must match your pole diameter, so measure it before ordering.
Tree skirts and tree collars hide the stand. Skirts are fabric circles that lie flat; choose a diameter a little wider than your tree's lowest branches, often 48 to 60 inches for a 7 ft tree. Collars are rigid rings in metal, wicker or wood that give a cleaner, modern look and do not get pulled out of place by pets.
