Size the wreath to its space. A standard front door is about 36 inches wide, and wreaths of 22 to 30 inches usually look right on it. For double doors, large windows or above a mantel, go bigger. Too small looks lost, too big hides the door.
Artificial wreaths last for years and do not shed. Look for full branches with mixed needle textures, and decorations such as pine cones and berries that are wired on rather than glued. Real wreaths smell wonderful but dry out, especially indoors.
Pre-lit wreaths usually run on batteries, and a timer makes them glow every evening without draining the batteries. If the wreath hangs outside, check that the lights and decorations are rated for outdoor use. Fluff the branches before hanging.
Use an over-the-door hanger or adhesive hook that fits your door thickness. Match the wreath to a garland for a coordinated entry, and see our porch decorations for more ideas.
