You do not need nails to hang a wreath. The right method depends on your door type, the wreath’s weight and whether the wreath hangs inside or outside.

Option 1: Over-the-door wreath hanger

A metal hanger hooks over the top of the door and holds the wreath on the front. It is the most common choice for front doors. Check that the hanger fits your door’s thickness and that the door still closes without scraping the weatherstripping. Choose an adjustable-length hanger to set the wreath at the right height.

Option 2: Adhesive hooks

Removable adhesive hooks work well on smooth, painted doors and glass. Check the weight rating against your wreath, and use a hook rated for outdoor use if the door faces the weather. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol first and wait the recommended time before hanging the wreath. Adhesive does not stick well in freezing temperatures, so apply it on a mild day.

Option 3: Magnetic hanger

On steel doors, a strong magnetic hanger holds the wreath without any marks. Test the magnet strength with your wreath before leaving it.

Option 4: Ribbon from the top of the door

Tie a wide ribbon to the wreath, run it over the top of the door and secure it on the inside with a thumbtack or adhesive hook on the top edge, where it will not be seen. This looks decorative and lets you set any height.

Option 5: Suction cups on glass

For windows and glass doors, heavy-duty suction hooks hold light wreaths. Clean the glass well. Suction cups can lose grip in cold weather, so check them regularly.

What height should a wreath hang?

Most people center the wreath at about eye level, or roughly in the upper third of the door. If the door has a peephole or a decorative window, hang the wreath just below it or center it on the glass.

What size wreath for a front door?

A standard front door is about 36 inches wide, and wreaths of 22 to 30 inches usually look balanced on it. Larger doors, double doors and windows above a fireplace can take bigger wreaths. See our Christmas wreaths for sizes and pre-lit options.

Protect the door

A wreath can scratch paint when the door opens and closes. Add felt pads to the back of the wreath frame or hanger to protect the finish.

For a coordinated entrance, pair the wreath with a garland and other porch decorations.
