Most kits come with pre-baked gingerbread walls and roof, icing mix or ready-made icing, candies and a base. Check what is included: some kits have plenty of candy, while others leave you wanting more decorations.
Icing is the glue, and it decides how easy assembly is. Kits with pre-made icing in a piping bag are the simplest for kids. Pre-assembled kits, where the walls are already joined, skip the hardest step and are the best choice for young children.
Many kits are made for decorating rather than eating. The gingerbread is often firm and may not be fresh by the end of the season, so check the label if you plan to eat it. Cover the table with parchment for easy cleanup.
Let the walls set for 15 to 30 minutes before adding the roof, and use cans or mugs to support walls while the icing dries. For more baking projects, see our cookie cutters guide.
