The porch is the first thing guests see up close, so it rewards a little effort. Start with the door: a wreath sized to the door, usually 22 to 30 inches for a standard front door. Then frame the door with matching pieces on both sides.
Popular choices include tall lanterns with flameless candles, porch signs, potted mini trees or urn fillers with pine and berries, and a layered doormat. A garland around the door frame or along the railing ties everything together.
Choose outdoor-rated materials because porches still get rain and snow. Battery-operated lights with timers are the easiest way to add glow without running cords across the doorway. Measure the porch before shopping so tall pieces do not crowd the door or block the walkway.
Keep the walkway clear and avoid anything that blocks the door from opening fully. For more light, add pathway lights leading up to the steps.
