Neat wrapping comes down to three things: cutting the right amount of paper, creasing every fold and hiding the tape. You do not need special skills, just a flat surface and a few minutes per gift.

What you need

  • Wrapping paper, ideally with a grid on the back
  • Sharp scissors
  • Double-sided tape, or clear tape
  • Ribbon or a bow, and a gift tag

Step 1: Measure the paper

Place the box face down on the paper. Wrap the paper around the box so it overlaps by about 2 inches. For the ends, leave paper on each side equal to a little more than half the height of the box. Too much paper creates bulky ends; too little leaves gaps.

Step 2: Cut straight

Use the grid lines on the back of the paper to cut a straight edge. Folding the cut edge under by about half an inch gives a clean finished line where the paper overlaps.

Step 3: Wrap the long sides

Center the box. Bring one side up and tape it to the box. Bring the other side over, folded edge on top, pull it snug and secure it with double-sided tape underneath so no tape shows.

Step 4: Fold the ends

  1. Push the top flap down against the end of the box, creasing the sides into triangles.
  2. Crease the two side triangles inward firmly.
  3. Fold the bottom flap up, folding its edge under for a clean line, and tape it.
  4. Repeat on the other end.

Run your fingernail along every edge to sharpen the creases.

Step 5: Add ribbon and a tag

Wrap ribbon around the box in a cross on the top, tie a knot and finish with a bow. Wired ribbon holds the shape of loops best. See our ribbons and bows for options.

Odd shapes

  • Cylinders: roll the paper around the gift, then pleat the ends toward the center and cover them with a bow.
  • Soft items: place clothing or plush toys in a box first, or use tissue paper and a gift bag.
  • Very awkward shapes: a gift bag or box is faster and looks just as good.
