How you store an artificial tree matters as much as how much you paid for it. Dust, damp, heat and crushing are what shorten a tree’s life. A few steps after the holidays keep it looking good for many seasons.
Step 1: Take ornaments and extra lights off first
Remove every ornament, hook and added light strand before you take the tree apart. Hooks left on branches get lost in the storage bag and can scratch lights and flocking.
Step 2: Clean the tree
Dust builds up over a season. Wipe the branches gently with a dry microfiber cloth, or use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on low suction. Do not use water on a pre-lit tree. If the tree is flocked, skip vacuuming and just shake off loose debris gently.
Step 3: Check the lights on a pre-lit tree
Plug the tree in one last time before packing. Note any dark sections and fix or replace bulbs now while you remember, instead of discovering the problem next December.
Step 4: Take it apart section by section
Unplug the tree, separate the sections from the top down and fold the hinged branches up gently. Do not force branches flat; they only need to fold enough to fit the bag. Wrap loose cords and wrap a soft strap or a strip of fabric around each section to keep branches together.
Step 5: Use a proper storage bag
The original cardboard box rarely survives more than a couple of seasons. A storage bag protects against dust and pests and has handles for carrying. Choose a bag sized for your tree height and check the actual length, since three-section trees vary. An upright bag keeps the tree assembled, so it needs very little shaping next year. Compare both styles in our tree storage bags.
Step 6: Pick the right spot
- Best: a closet, under-stairs storage or a climate-controlled basement.
- Use with care: a garage, if the bag is off the floor and away from damp walls.
- Avoid: hot attics, which can make plastic brittle and affect wiring over time, and anywhere that gets wet.
Store the bag lying flat or upright as the bag maker recommends, and do not stack heavy boxes on top of it. Crushing is what flattens branches permanently.
Step 7: Keep pests away
Make sure the tree is clean and dry before it goes in the bag. Cedar blocks or sachets in the storage area help deter moths and insects. Avoid mothballs, which leave a strong smell on the tree.
Store the rest of your decorations too
